آيَاتُ الذِّكْرِ مُنِيرَةْ، فِيهَا الْعِبَرَاتُ كَبِيرَةْ
وَبِآيَاتِ الْحَيَوَانَاتْ، نَجِدُ الْأَجْنَاسَ كَثِيرَةْ
The verses of the Reminder are radiant, holding great lessons;
and in the verses about animals we find many kinds
الْكَلْبُ

الْكَلْبُ بَعْدَ مُعَانَاةِ الْخَوْفِ نَامَ وَأَصْحَابُ الْكَهْفْ
فَبِإِذْنِ عَزِيزٍ وَمُعِينْ، نَامُوا لِسِنِينَ وَسِنِينْ
قَدْ أَنْجَاهُمْ مِنْ بَلْوَاهُمْ، رَبٌّ رَحْمَنٌ دَيَّانْ
The dog, after the hardship of fear, slept — and the People of the Cave;
by the leave of the Mighty Helper they slept for years and years;
their Lord, the Most Merciful Judge, saved them from their plight
الْفِيلُ

الْفِيلُ قَدْ جَاءَ بِهِ الْحَبَشِي، بَغْضَاءَ فِيهِ وَغَيّ
اللهُ عَلَى الْفِيلِ قَدْ أَرْسَلْ، طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلْ
رَغْمَ الْكُرْبَةِ تَحْمِي الْكَعْبَةَ، فاللهُ عَزِيزٌ رَحْمَنٌ
The elephant the Abyssinian brought, with hatred and wrong;
Allah sent against the elephant birds in flocks;
despite the distress He protects the Kaʿbah — Allah is Mighty, Most Merciful

الْحُوتُ

الْحُوتُ ابْتَلَعَ نَبِيَّ اللهْ، فَغَدَا فِي وَسَطِ دَوَاهِي
لَكِنَّ الْبَارِي أَنْجَاهْ، مِنْ كُرْبَتِهِ مِنْ بَلْوَاهْ
يُونُسُ سَبَّحَ وَلِذَا أَفْلَحَ، وَنَجَا فِي تِلْكَ الْأَزْمَانْ
The whale swallowed Allah's prophet, and he was amid calamities;
but the Maker saved him from his distress and plight;
Yūnus glorified Allah and so prospered and was saved in those times
الْفَرَاشُ

الْفَرَاشُ عَلِمْنَا عَنْهَا الْمَبْعُوثْ، فِي ذِكْرِ «فَرَاشٍ مَبْثُوثْ»
هَذَا حَالُ جَمِيعِ النَّاسْ، يَوْمَ الْحَشْرِ بِدُونِ حَوَاسْ
تَخْرُجُ قِطَعًا تَمْشِي جَمْعًا، فِي يَوْمِ حِسَابٍ وَبَيَانْ
The butterfly — the Messenger taught us of it, in the mention of «scattered moths»;
this is the state of all people on the Day of Gathering, senseless;
they come out in scattered groups, walking together, on the Day of Reckoning

الْإِبِلُ

الْإِبِلُ تَمْشِي فِي كُلِّ بَهَاءْ، فَهِيَ سَفِينُ الصَّحْرَاءْ
أَفَلَا تَنْظُرُهَا الْأَبْصَارْ، وَتَرَى مَا صَنَعَ الْجَبَّارْ
مَشْيُ الْجَمَلِ نَحْوَ الْعَمَلِ، تَنْظُرُهُ مِنَّا الْعَيْنَانْ
The camel walks in full splendour — it is the ship of the desert;
do eyes not look at it and see what the Almighty made?
the camel's walk toward work — our two eyes behold it
الْأَسَدُ

الْأَسَدُ قَسْوَرَةٌ فِي الْقُرْآنْ، يَزْأَرُ فِي كُلِّ زَمَانْ
يَفْتِكُ حَتْمًا بِالْأَنْيَابْ، وَلِذَا يُدْعَى مَلِكَ الْغَابْ
فَهُوَ الْأَقْوَى زَأَرَ وَدَوَّى، مَلِكٌ فِي الْغَابِ وَسُلْطَانْ
The lion is 'qaswarah' in the Qur'an, roaring in every age;
it strikes surely with fangs, and so is called king of the jungle;
it is the strongest — it roared and resounded — a king of the jungle and a sultan
